York Gulch Community Bulletin Board

[Ed. note: Think of this page as the index cards posted on the wall of a laundromat circa 1970. Two exceptions:
   (1) Nothing commercial; I can't advertise my company, and you can't advertise yours (links to personal and business pages will be posted: see below).
   (2) There may not be any Puritans among us, but word your messages as if there were.

Community News

Fire Dept. Volunteers. Kathleen's wheedling and needling are finally paying off; YGFD has added five new members:

  • Brian Oppenheimer (who bought the Mendez stead) has been made a Lt. and appointed head of the YGFD;
  • Wayne Hays (who looks like he's been in these-here mountains since they was little hills);
  • Jeff & Laurie Beckel;
  • Bill Sanders.
One or two more, and we'll just about have replaced KK. Paul Cordell (prior paramedic experience; no need to wait for the Dumont ambulance!) has promised to join. And Marci Bowman promises to finish filling out her paperwork. Do we hear an eighth volunteer? Preferably someone who can arrive at the base of Floyd Hill before the ISFD, the County, or the State Patrol -- as you-know-who so often did.

Not surprisingly, given our vulnerability on the forest interface, most of the newbies are interested in fighting wildfires. (The other two primary activities of the Clear Creek Fire Authority are responding to structure fires and pulling Denver-to-Summit County skiers from their cars.) Regulations have tightened considerably since Sanders was last on a fireline in 1972; physical fitness and classroom work are now mandatory prior to joining any USFS-led effort. In April, the Beckels and Sanders passed the fitness test (3 miles @ 4 mph with a 45-pound pack); in May all three passed the classroom portion. Now they are waiting for their USFS "red card" -- but since civilians can follow a fire a mile into Forest Service land without certification, all three can operate anywhere in YG as part of CCFA.

Generators. Several people have moved up the Gulch relying solely on generator power -- or have expressed their intention to do so. Often these generators are old or inexpensive (i.e., noisy) and unprotected. Several neighbors are complaining. We aren't particularly close to the worst examples, but we've passed thru the areas involved, and can understand the complaints. Consideration requires that:

  • an alternate source of energy (solar, wind) be included;
  • the generator be protected (weather-proofed for your sake, sound-proofed for your neighbors') and relatively quiet-running.

Town of Solar. Colorado entities can't raise levies in odd-numbered years; hence, no action at least until this year. Central's rapidly deteriorating situation is being evaluated by the Board; any input appreciated.

Email List. Marci Bowman (mbowman@scribble-count.com) maintains an email list of YGers; she uses it for meeting announcements and other items, and other items. If you want to be on the list, notify Marci -- and if you want to be only a "blind" recipient, tell her that, too.

Items for Sale or Rent

The Moore's have sold a generator, a refrigerator, solar panels, and an inverter on this page -- and you can do the same: email Marci or Bill.
Gold Bug Mining claim. Craig Wandrey, Marci Bowman, & Bill Sanders have purchased the Gold Bug claim (4.35 acres, Survey #2139) and are offering it for sale. It straddles both Mule Deer and Red Tail, so access is no problem. Three possible building sites, one excellent. Call Craig (7-9176) and leave message, or contact Marci (303/939-3246 / mbowman@scribble-count.com) or Bill (7-4646 / bsanders@boonieliving.com)

Excavating Equipment. Paul Cordell will have a Bobcat, a backhoe, possibly some other equipment on his building site during spring/summer 2002. Call him (303/670-4569) if you want to use the equipment and share the expense.

Good Stuff for Sale or Free!. Paul Cordell also has surplus building materials from a demolition contract. You name it, it's probably in the pile. From fixtures, doors, windows, etc. all the way to 10-base-T Cat-V network cable. For YGers, stuff is real cheap, or free! For more information, call Paul at 303/670-4569.

Windows (not Microsoft). Bill and Marci have some incorrectly ordered windows. They are Certainteed New Haven XT with low "E" glass, tan vinyl in a variety of sizes. Most are double sliders. Priced to sell! Call or email for a list of sizes. Call Marci at 303/939-3246.

Propane Dryer. Kathleen (Krebs) Gaubatz has a used propane gas dryer to give away. A donation to the Firehouse would be a nice gesture.

Trailer. The 16-foot trailer Marci Bowman and Bill Sanders used for the last five years is available for temporary quarters. Its advantages will be apparent; its weaknesses candidly itemized. 303.567.4646.
